- Office hours: After class, by appointment, and as scheduled.
Topics in Algebra: This course will cover quadratic forms over fields, quaternion algebras,
Brauer groups, local and global fields, local-global principles, Galois cohomology, and other topics as time permits.
Students are not expected to have taken courses in algebraic number theory and algebraic geometry previously, but some familiarity
with those topics would be helpful. Conversely, this course will be helpful to those who plan to take courses in
algebraic number theory and algebraic geometry later.
Class schedule: Mon and Wed, 12-1:30pm in DRL 4C8. After spring break, meetings are online.
- Textbook: The primary source will be T.Y. Lam, Introduction to Quadratic forms over Fields,
Graduate Studies in Mathematics, vol. 67, AMS, 2005. Additional material will be taken from other sources.
- Course structure: The class will meet twice weekly. There will be occasional homework assignments to be handed in.
