Course: Continuation of Math 3600. We will cover uniform convergence, the space of continuous functions, differentiable mappings, inverse and implicit function theorems, integration. The primary text for the course is "Elementary Classical Analysis" by Marsden and Hoffman, 2nd edition, ISBN-10. 0716721058, ISBN-13. 978-0716721055. Should be available at the Penn Bookstore. We will cover most of Chapters 5 through 9 in the Marsden-Hoffman book.

Exams and Grades: There will be two (in-class) Midterm exams, an in-class (cumulative) final exam, and also a take-home final exam. Midterm 1 counts 25% of your grade, Midterm 2 counts 25% of your grade, and the in-class final exam also counts 25% of your grade. The take-home final counts 15% of your grade and HW assignments count 10% of your grade. The HW assignments will be posted at the bottom of this web page. Midterm 1 will be on Tuesday, September 30 from 10:15am-11:45am in DRL 2C6 and Midterm 2 will be on Thursday, Nov. 20 from 10:15am-11:45am in DRL 2C6. Both the midterms will be closed-book: no calculators, smart phones, notes, etc.

Midterm 1: The first midterm is a closed book exam. No books, notes, smart phones, calculators, etc. are allowed. It covers all the material from Chapter 5 (except section 5.10), and also section 4.6 (uniform continuity) of the book ``Elementary Classical Analysis" by Marsden and Hoffman, second edition. It also assumes knowledge of basic results in topology related to compactness such as the Bolzano-Weierstrass theorem and the Heine-Borel theroem. On the exam you will be asked to solve problems related to material from the sections of the book listed above. You will also be asked to reproduce proofs of two or three of the following four results:
a) Uniform Continuity Theorem (4.6.2 from the book)
b) Theorem 5.3.1 from the boook (on interchanging order of integration and summaiton)
c) Theorem 5.5.3 (on complete metric spaces, Banach spaces, and the space of continuous functions)
d) Abel's partial summation formula (see page 308 in the text).

Midterm 2: The second midterm is a closed book exam. No books, notes, smart phones, calculators, etc. are allowed. It covers all the material from ??? of the book "Elementary Classical Analysis" by Marsden and Hoffman, second edition.
