A 9 meter by 12 meter rectangular garden has a walk one meter wide all
around it. What is the area of the walk?
Once again, the best way to solve this problem is to
draw a diagram or picture of the garden and the walk. A simple rectangle
to represent the garden, and a larger one around it to represent the
walk, as shown here:
Then divide the walk into pieces that you can find the area of.
