Hints and solutions to Draw a Picture #3
A 9 meter by 12 meter rectangular garden has a walk one meter wide
all around it. What is the area of the walk?
-
Armed with the picture:
You can see that the sidewalk can be divided up into several rectangles.
For instance, you can divide it into 4 rectangles along the garden -
two of these will be 9 meters by 1 meter (total area: 18 square meters),
two of them will be 12 meters by 1 meter (total area: 24 square meters),
and there will be four 1-by-1 meter squares in the corners, for 4 more
square meters. So the total area of the sidewalk is 18 + 24 + 4 = 46
square meters.
