The Course

The goal of math 170 is to foster a deeper experience in and appreciation of mathematics by studying various topics in mathematics. These topics include set theory, basic logic, numeration system, basic number theory, graph theory and scheduling etc. We will use the textbook

We will use canvas to upload howework, grades, make announcements, and share course notes and solutions. "https://canvas.upenn.edu/"

Students can discuss problems with each other or seek tips from books, articles or online rescources. But it is wrong to simply copy from any source. See Penn Office of Student Conduct.

Grading Policy

Your grade for the course will be determined based on the following factors:

The 1st Midterm Exam : 20%
The 2nd Midterm Exam : 20%
The 3rd Midterm Exam: 20%
Final Exam: 30%
Quiz: 10%


Exams

The 1st Midterm : In class, Feb. 13.

The 2nd Midterm: In class, Mar. 27.

The 3rd Midterm: In class, Apr. 19.

Final Exam : TBA


Homework and Quiz

Homework will be assigned weakly and due on the following weak. It will be collected on lectures every Tuesdays and be checked (but not graded exactly) if the students do the homework or not. There will be a short quiz (10 -20 min) on every recitation.

Feb. 16, Drop Period ends.

Mar. 3-11, No Class (Spring break).

Mar. 27, Second Midterm exam.

Mar. 30, Last day to withdraw from a course.

Apr. 19 , Third Midterm exam.

Apr. 24, Last day of classes of this course.

Apr. 26-27, Reading days.
