Dear Colleague:

The field of biostatistics offers excellent opportunities for students
with good quantitative skills. Well paying jobs in industry, academia,
and government are available for persons with a Master's or a PhD degree
in biostatistics.

The Department of Biostatistics at Emory University offers Master's and
PhD programs in biostatistics. We are looking for students with good
mathematical skills who are interested in the life or health sciences.
I would therefore be greatful if you could forward the message below to
students who intend to graduate during this academic year.

Thank you very much for your assistance. Please feel free to contact me
if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Haber, PhD

Dear Student:

* Do you have good quantitative and computer skills?

* Are you interested in the biomedical or health sciences?

If so, then BIOSTATISTICS is an excellent career option for you!

Most people have never heard of BIOSTATISTICS or have only a vague idea of
this interesting and exciting discipline that makes major contributions to
society's welfare.

BIOSTATISTICIANS work with other scientists to solve today's and
tomorrow's health challenges, such as:

* What mathematical models best describe and predict the transmission of
  HIV/AIDS?

* How many cases of AIDS will there be in the year 2010?

* What are the causes of Alzheimer's Disease or various types of cancer?

* What are the most effective and affordable treatments for cardiovascular
  disease patients?

* How do you develop and test a new drug to treat Parkinson's Disease?

* How can we increase the percentage of young children who are vaccinated
  against major childhood infectious diseases?

BIOSTATISTICIANS work in different ways on important health issues. Some
activities include:

* Conducting mathematical/statistical research on new methods for modeling
  or analyzing health related data.

* Collaborating with other scientists as valuable members of research
  teams.

* Teaching biostatistics or statistics at high school, undergraduate or
  postgraduate levels.

* Advising public health officials on the health status of the population
at local, state, or national levels.

Beginning graduate students in BIOSTATISTICS have varied backgrounds. Many
have a degree in math, applied math or statistics. Others have majors in
the biological, health or social sciences. All have strong undergraduate
or graduate training in mathematics or statistics, coupled with the desire
to study both the theory and application of statistical methods to the
biomedical and health sciences. Most graduate programs in BIOSTATISTICS
do not require prior knowledge in statistics or in the biomedical/health
sciences.

Employment and career prospects for Master's and PhD level
BIOSTATISTICIANS continue to be excellent. Typical employers are:

* Industry, such as a pharmaceutical company, research organization, or
  managed care group.

* Academia, including schools of public health, schools of medicine, or
college/university departments of math or statistics.

* Federal government, such as the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Food and Drug
  Administration (FDA).

* Local and state health departments.

Typical entry level salaries for BIOSTATISTICIANS in 1998 were:

* Pharmaceutical: $37,000 to $58,000 for Master's;  $58,000 to $80,000 for
  Ph.D.

* Academia:  $37,000 to $42,000 for Mater's; $50,000 to $55,000 for Ph.D.

* Government:  $32,000 to $42,000 for Master's;  $40,000 to $50,000 for
  Ph.D.

The DEPARTMENT OF BIOSTATISTICS at Emory University offers the following
degrees in BIOSTATISTICS, with available tuition scholarships, stipends
and/or research assistantships:

* MPH and MSPH through the Rollins School of Public Health.

* MS and PhD through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

* Postdoctoral research training and experience.
