The way our lab sessions will work is by presenting solutions to problems in front of the class at the blackboard. The goal is to learn how to carefully lay out a mathematical argument, communicate it effectively, and be able to spot gaps in proofs.

Homework problems are due on Fridays in lecture and returned to you in recitation after it has been graded. Selected problems from each assignment will be graded in detail while the rest may be graded less in depth. You may work with each other about homework problems but your solution must be entirely in your own words. Your grade from me will mainly be a composite of your homework grades. There will also be a small amount of points awarded for class attendance and participation.

Grading of Homework problems: Problems graded more rigorously will be given a numeric score (e.g. 10/10). Problems graded more leniently will be given (in descending order of correctness): double star, single star, or check. Double star means that the key ideas were present (smaller mistakes are OK). Single star means that there is significant work but major omissions. A plain check mark means that I can see you've made an honest attempt at the problem. Note: Sometimes I write check marks while mentally verifying individual steps of your work, and these have nothing to do with a check mark as a score for an entire problem. The homework score is a combination of the scores on all the problems, with the weighting of star scores vs numeric scores being at my discretion each week.
