Course Information

Class Web Page: http://www.math.upenn.edu/~rimmer/math103/math103.html

Directions to DRL 4C15 (my office): head left when leaving DRL 2C4 (our recitation room) to reach the stairs, go up to the 4th floor. My office is 5 doors down on your left.

Lecture:

MWF - 12:00 - 12:50 - DRL A6

Recitation Sections:

  • Section 201: Tuesdays 8:30-9:30 am, 2C4 DRL
  • Section 202: Tuesdays 9:30-10:30 am, 2C4 DRL
  • Section 203: Thursdays 8:30-9:30 am, 2C4 DRL
  • Section 204: Thursdays 9:30-10:30 am, 2C4 DRL

  • Grade:

Some of this is a repeat of the Instructor's policy laid out here.

Your final grade is calculated as such:
  • 20% recitation grade (homework + quizzes)
  • 25% first exam
  • 25% second exam
  • 30% final exam

  • Homework problems are assigned here for material covered in each lecture. Homework is collected (on specified days) in lecture and returned to you in recitation after it has been graded. Usually 3 problems from each homework set are selected and graded. You can view your homework grades online by logging on to Blackboard with your pennkey. You may talk with each other about homework problems but you must write up solutions individually.

At the end of recitation we will have a short 10 minute quiz. The problems here will be similar to recent homework problems so as to test your knowledge without the aid of notes and books.

Your recitation grade (20% of total grade) is evenly weighted between homework average (10%) and quiz average (10%). Your lowest quiz grade and lowest homework grade will be dropped from the calculation.

    Policy:

There are no make ups for quizzes and exams in general. If you are absent and cannot take a quiz or exam then the grade you recieve for that test will be 0. Exceptions are below, along with what you are responsible for:

Religious Holidays: Penn policy on holidays is summarized here. The student must inform us in the first 2 weeks of the semester about any holidays they observe which are not already listed in 1) or 2).
Scheduled Absence: Midterms and Finals are not always held during usual class time. The hours and dates for every exam in this course are listed here. If another class or Penn activity (e.g., sports meet) takes place during that time you must notify us sufficiently in advance.
Sickness: Doctor's note should be provided explaining the condition and dates affected.

Who to contact: Inform Rimmer if one of the above affects exams or homework (since he collects those); if it affects a missed quiz inform me directly.

Other: If something doesn't fit into the above exceptions contact Rimmer and explain the situation to see what can be done.

Finally, if you require extra accommodations during examinations this must be officially handled through the Office of Student Disabilities Services.

    Advice:

  • Show up and take notes
  • Ask questions (in class and office hours)
  • Read the book
  • Do your homework

  • More advice and extra help resources are listed at the bottom of this page on Rimmer's website.
