BCS to count exempt games in formula

GREENSBORO, N.C. --The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) issued a clarification of its selection formula, BCS Coordinator John Swofford announced.

The BCS administrative group met and reviewed exempt games and conference championship games and decided both will be included in all elements of the BCS standings. However, as in years past, wins in exempt games and conference championship games will not be counted towards the nine-game victory total needed to qualify for the BCS At-Large selection pool.

"In an effort to be fair, we have affirmed that exempt games will continue to be used in the calculation of the formula," said Swofford. "Teams who choose to participate in the pre-season exempt games risk the negative impact of a loss in the formula, so they should be able to see the value of a victory.

"Since not all teams in the country participate in exempt games and conference championship games, a victory in these games will not be counted towards the nine-win total necessary for selection into the BCS pool."

Swofford also reaffirmed the BCS practice of counting just one victory over a team per year in the BCS formula. If a team defeats another team twice during the season (including exempt and conference championships), it will receive quality points for only one victory in the newly established quality win component of the formula.

The initial 2001 BCS standings will be released on Monday, October 15, with the final BCS announcement set for Sunday, December 2. The Rose Bowl presented by AT&T will host the BCS Championship Game on Thursday, January 3.
