Information on Exam 3 for Math 314, Spring 2019

Exam 3 was held on Wednesday, May 1. The exam was out of a total of 100 points (five problems worth 20 points each, with partial credit given). This exam counts for 15% of the course grade. The first two exams also each count for 15% of the course grade. Homework counts for 40% of the course grade, while participation counts for 15%.

The distribution of grades on Exam 3 was a bit more compressed than on the first two exams (lower standard deviation). The median score on Exam 3 was 87, the same as on Exam 2. The cutoffs for the other quartiles on Exam 3 were 77 and 93 (vs. 74 and 96 on Exam 2), with just over half of the class getting scores between 85 and 95.

To interpret the numerical scores as letter grades, the following can be used as a guideline for this exam:

In computing the course grades, the numerical scores on exams will be used, in conjunction with the letter grade guidelines. As a result, for example, a high B+ on this exam will count for almost as much as a low A- (and similarly for the other cut-offs).
