MATH 104, LECTURE 1 PROBLEM SET #6
Due in recitation, week of Feb. 22, 2010

Read Stewart, sections 8.6 and 8.7, and do the core problems from those two sections.

In the on-line Maple manual, go through the beginning of the Maple Introduction Session
Instructions and then the first three Maple items (from "getting started" to "Maple
syntax"), to become familiar with using Maple. After doing this:

* Go through the beginning of item 11 on differentiation. Then open up a Maple
worksheet and use Maple to do problems 28 and 40 on page 198 of Stewart.

* Go through the beginning of item 12 on integration. On your Maple worksheet do
problems 25, 31, 40, 55 on page 555 of Stewart.

* Go through item 13 on approximate integration using ideas from Riemann sums.
On your Maple worksheet, obtain a numerical value for the integral, applying the
"evalf" command to the value in terms of log. Then use the command for Riemann
sums with right endpoints, and the commands for the trapezoidal rule and for
Simpson's rule (given at the end of item 13), with 10 subintervals. Compare the
numerical values obtained for each of these to the numerical value of the actual
integral. Also redo problem 10 in section 8.7 (from the core problems) using Maple.

Submit a printout of your worksheet along with the core problems.
