Course Information

Grade Structure

    Grade structure:
  • Homework 15%
  • Quizzes 15%
  • Midterms 20+20%
  • Final exam 30%

(1) Homework assignments are due on each lecture day at 10am. A typical homework assignment will be online, through a system called MyMathLab. Information on how to register for MyMathLab is in teh enclosed document. You can also go to: http://www.firstdayofclass.com/demos_math.html I will demonstrate that system in our first class meeting.

A typical homework assignment will consist of:

  • several problems from the text exploring the material covered in class,
  • a new reading assignment, and
  • one problem based on the reading assignment.
  • Occasionally the assignment will include some old exam problems or some extra credit and challenge problems.

We will automatically drop your three lowest homework scores of the semester. The remaining ones will be averaged into your grade. The total weight of the homework is 15%. (This will be broken down roughly into 10% for online problems, 3% for old exam problems, and 2% for attendance.)

    (2) Quizzes will be given in each recitation by the TA. Normally, they will test the material of the last two homework assignments turned in. There will be an emphasis on old exams as opposed to textbook problems.

We will automatically drop your two lowest quiz scores of the semester. The remaining ones will be averaged into your grade. The total weight of the quizzes is 15%.

    (3) Midterm exams:

    • Th 2/2 12-1:30 in class, Chs 1-2: functions and limits
    • T 3/20 12-1:30 in class, Chs 3-4: differentiation,
    • Th 4/19 7-8:30PM, DRL A7, Chs 5-7: integration.
    • Please reserve these dates. If you cannot take any of these due to a conflict with a regularly scheduled Penn class (presumably only the third midterm might cause such conflicts), please let me know asap and definitely no later than 1/20/2012.

The midterms will involve a combination of multiple choice and free response problems.

You may use a two-sided crib sheet in your own handwriting, but no printed material, laptops, calculators, cell phones, ipads, or friends. You cheat, you die.

If you miss up to one midterm for whatever reason, we will automatically drop that grade. If you take all three midterms, we will automatically drop the lowest score. The other two scores will be averaged into your grade, each worth 20%.

      (4) The final exam will take place Friday, May 4, 2012, 12:00-2:00pm; it is common to both sections of Math 103. Like the midterms, the final exam will involve a combination of multiple choice and free response problems. You may use a two-sided crib sheet in your own handwriting, but no printed material, laptops, calculators, cell phones, ipads, or friends. You cheat, you die. The final is worth 30% of the grade.
