Ten strangers attend a meeting. As introductions are made, each person
shakes hands with all the others. How many handshakes occur?

By drawing a diagram that has a dot for each person, and a segment
connecting two dots for a handshake between two people, we
recognize this problem as the n=10 case of the dots
and segments problem from three days ago.

So the solution is the same: there are
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 = 10(9)/2 = 45 handshakes.
