What is the sum of the first 4 odd numbers? of the first 5 odd numbers?
of the first 7 odd numbers? of the first 10 odd numbers?
of the first 2356 odd numbers?
This is a different kind of problem from the ones you have been
doing up until now. In this kind of problem, you should work out
the "small" cases (like the sum of the first 3 or 4 or 5 odd numbers)
and look for a pattern that you can use to do the
larger cases without doing all that arithmetic.You might also think
about how the coloring of the squares in the grid is related to
this problem.
