Notes for Math 240
Some
suggested old math 240 final exam problems
when preparing for weekly quizzes
and the final exam.
(Of course you are encouraged to do more if you have the time.)
General Information:
- See the Canvas page and the
Math Department Calculus Page for general information
about this course.
- Zoom links for lectures in the first two weeks and for office
hours are posted in the Announcement section of the Canvas page.
The first meeting, for both sections 005 and 006, is 1/12/2022
5:15 pm-6:45 pm by zoom.
- Lecture class meetings are Mondays (for section 221)
and Wednesdays (for section 223)
from 5:15 pm to 6:45 pm in DRL A6.
- Recitation classes
- Section 221; Wednesdays 8:30-10:00 am in DRL 3C4
- Section 223; Mondays 8:30-10:30 am in DRL 3C4
- Books:The canvas page contains lectures given by
Prof. Dennis DeTurck of Penn which are specialized for this course,
which you watch and take short quizzes on.
It is a good idea though to have an auxillary text to refer
to for basic results on Linear Algebra and Differential Equations.
Any number of books will do; some examples are
- "Introduction to Linear Algebra and Differential Equations"
by John W. Dettman,
- "Differential Equations and Linear Algebra", 4th ed.
by Edwards, Penney and Calvis,
- "DifferentialEquations and Linear Algebra", 4th ed.
by Goode and Annin,
- "Linear Algebra and Differential Equations" by Alexander Givental, UC Berkeley (online lecture notes).
- Students often find
math 240 old final exams useful when preparing for
weekly quizzes and the final exam.
- Here is what a "typical week" for math 240 may be like for you:
- Sunday: Watch the first pre-recorded lecture/section in "Module".
Do the related practice exercises, then
attempt the first quiz. You have two attempts.
If you fail the first attempt, retry the next day after
lecture/recitation.
- Monday: Go either to the lecture with me or with your
recitation, depending on your section.
- Tuesday: Watch the 2nd pre-recorded lecture/section, do the
related practice exercises and attempt
the second quiz.
- Wednesday: Go either to the lecture with me or with your
recitation, depending on your section.
- Thursday: All autograded Canvas quizzes are due at midnight.
Go over the practice problems related to the coming Friday quiz
and make sure you can do them.
Practice with questions in old final exams if you have the time;
people found this helpful in the past.
- Friday: Starting Week 3, we will have a quiz on that day. It will
be proctored on Zoom and you will have to upload your work
on Canvas. There will be different schedules to accommodate
most students.
Course grade:
Weekly quizzes (60%), Autograded quizzes (20%),
Final exam (20%)
