Notes and Homework Assignment

Math 240 log: what are covered in lectures, updated regularly.

General Information for my section:

• Lecture class meetings are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:00 pm to 1:50 pm in DRL A1.
• Recitation classes are on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. You MUST be enrolled in and attend one of the following recitation sections:
  • Section 211; Tuesdays 8:00-9:00 am in DRL 3C8
  • Section 212; Tuesdays 9:30-10:30 am in DRL 3C8
  • Section 213; Thursdays 8:00-9:00 am in DRL 4C4
  • Section 214; Thursdays 9:30-10:30 am in DRL 4C4
  Recitations begin on Wednesday, January 10 (which is a University Monday)
• The text book is Differential Equations and Linear Algebra by Goode and Annin, 4th edition.
• The Syllabus and Core Problems on the Math Department's Math 240 site.
• Old final exams and other useful information (including the syllabus) can be found on the the Math Department Math 240 page.
• The exams will generally be set at the level of the Core Problems. The old final exams are regarded as part of the Core Problems.
• Remarks about the old final exams
  • There was a major change of the syllabus of math 240 in fall 2012. You will find plenty of problems involving line integrals, surface integrals, Stokes theorem and divergence theorem in the exams before that. You can safely ignore those questions in old exams, but questions about linear algebra and differential equations in the "older final exams" are still quite relevant.
  • Each assignment contains problems from old final exams.

Basic Ground Rules:

• The COURSE GRADE is based on: Homework (10%), Midterm exams (45%) Final exam (35%), Quizzes and everything else (10%)
• Homework will be assigned the weekend before, and will be due at the beginning of Friday's lecture the following week.
• Homeworks will be spot graded and returned in the recitations. Answers to selected problems will be posted on the web by late Friday or early Saturday.
• LATE WORK will NEVER be accepted.
• You can hand in your homeworks early, either in person or by other arrangement. Never leave your homeworks in any mail box of the mathematics department.
• Homework will contain instructions for reading. Make sure you do the reading before the class for which it is assigned. I will assume you have done so.
• You are responsible for doing all the core problems, including the old exam problems. They form a constant part of your home work assignment.
• You are encouraged to work in groups and discuss with each other. But the work you hand in MUST BE YOUR OWN WRITE-UP. See Penn's code of academic integrity.
• You can use a hand-written note sheet (both sides) at most 8.5'' by 11'' in size during the in-class midterm and final exams. No electronic device is allowed. (We will make an exception for "dumb" watches.) All electronic devices, including cell phones and smart watches, should be put in your bags with ringers off during the entire exam. Note that you cannot use a cell phone as a timepiece. Using any communication device (including computers, cell phones, calculators, PDA's, smart watches, etc.) during these exams is a serious breach of academic integrity.
• Official policies governing final examinations

Grading notes: At the end of the semester, everyone who has not withdrawn from the class will get a grade. Incompletes will not be given to avoid F's.
